Description

The obverse: the two-headed eagle designed by artist I. Bilibin. The inscriptions along the rim: at the top — «ДВА РУБЛЯ 1997 г.» (TWO RUBLES 1997), at the bottom — «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA). The letters below indicate the metal sign, the fineness, the fine metal content and the mint trademark.

The reverse: the portrait of A.L. Tchizhevsky. In the background – the Constellation Aquarius (the astrological symbol of February), the sun in eclipse, the star galaxy and a man under a tree. Under the inscription «А.Л. ЧИЖЕВСКИЙ» (A.L. TCHIZHEVSKY) and the dates «1897-1964» – a lyre, a sheet of paper, a paint brush, and a pen to symbolize his various gifts.

Alexander Leonidovich Tchizhevsky (1897-1964) – Russian scientist and founder of space biology, space medicine and electrohaemodynamics, full member of more than 30 academies of science in Europe, Asia, and America – was famous as a philosopher, poet, painter and musician who left rich literary heritage and nearly 400 landscapes in water-colors and oils.
