Description

The obverse: in the centre the emblem of the Bank of Russia [the two-headed eagle with wings down, under it the semicircular inscription Ȼ (BANK OF RUSSIA)] framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim on top: ɻ (ONE HUNDRED RUBLES), below: to the left indications of the precious metal and its fineness, in the centre the year of issue 2007 . (2007), to the right the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.

The reverse: in the centre two trains, driven by a steam engine from the first half of the XIXth century (above) and by a modern locomotive (below, against the mountain background), above to the left the route plan with marks of stops -û, λ, ʻ (SAINT PETERSBURG, TSARSKOYE SELO, PAVLOVSK); on top the inscription along the rim: 170 ̻ (THE 170TH ANNIVERSARY OF RUSSIAN RAILWAYS).

The first Russian railway for public use was built in 1837 for supplying railway connection between Saint Petersburg, Tsarskoye Selo and Pavlovsk. The experience of building and exploitation of Tsarskoye Selos railway showed the possibility, profitability and practicability of railway transport in Russian climate.
