The obverse: in the center the Emblem of the Bank of Russia (the two headed eagle designed by I.Bilibin, lower the semicircular inscription Ȼ (BANK OF RUSSIA) framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim: at the top ܻ (ONE RUBLE), at the bottom 1999, the letters to the left indicate the metal sign and the fineness, to the right the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.

The reverse: the picture of two hedgehogs. The inscription at the top along the rim: ƻ (THE DAURIYAN HEDGEHOG).

The Dauriyan hedgehog (Erinaceus dauricus Sundevall) inhabits in the steppes of the south and south eastern regions of the Transbaikal (this region is known as Daurskaya land Dauriya). The population of this species has been reducing in the last 40 years.It is under protection on the shores of the Toreysky lakes in the eastern part of the region behind the Baikal Lake.
