Description

The obverse: in the centre the Emblem of the Bank of Russia [the two-headed eagle with wings down, lower the semicircular inscription Ȼ (BANK OF RUSSIA)] framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim: at the top ɻ (TWENTY FIVE RUBLES), at the bottom the year of issue 2006, the letters to the left indicate the metal sign and the fineness, to the right the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.

The reverse: view of architectural ensemble of a monastery with a glassy reflection on the water-table. The inscriptions along the rim: at the top ܻ (THE TIKHVIN MONASTERY OF THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD), at the bottom . XVI . (FOUNDED in the XVIth century).

The Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God was founded in the town of Tikhvin in 1560 according to the Edict of the Tsar Ivan IV. The holy Cell arose at the place which had been blessed in 1383 by the appearance of the miracleworking icon of the Mother of God Hodegetria (Showing the Way) that was named thereafter Tikhvin icon.
